Candidate for CCIFS Grand Prix 2023 ''Innovation'': Belgrade Airport

During this year's Green Gala evening, which will take place on April 27th, we will organize the traditional Grand Prix CCIFS awards ceremony

In the past 5 years, significant investments have been made in the infrastructure projects focused on modernization, expansion and reconstruction of Belgrade airport. There is a strong focus on projects directly impacting  environmental improvement : two facilities for collection and segregation of generated waste, a new gas-fired heating plant replacing the old heavy fuel heating plant, a solar plant, a facility for the treatment of sanitary wastewater and the introduction of LED lighting throughout the airport complex.

Two facilities-transfer stations were built for the collection and segregation of generated waste and the temporary storage of recyclable waste until it is handed over to authorized operators for recycling. The investment value is 1.3 million EUR.

A new 44 MW gas heating plant was built (replacing the old heavy fuel heating plant), equipped with a trigenerative system that produces electricity and, additionally, producing thermal energy used for heating during winter months while during summer, through the absorption chillers, producing energy used for cooling. This system provides a higher heating efficiency by approximately 25% and reduces carbon footprint by 25%. The investment value is close to 8.0 million EUR.

A photovoltaic solar system was built containing 2984 modules with an installed power of 1 MWp. The solar power plant provides the airport with electricity obtained from renewable sources and produces about 1,130,000 kWh of green electricity per year. The expected reduction of GHG emissions is approximately 10%. The value of the investment with the supplemental equipment is approximately 2.2 million EUR.

A plant was built for the treatment of sanitary wastewater generated at the airport complex and the aircraft. The plant shall commence operation in the course of 2023. The investment value is around 3.9 million EUR.

Furthermore, measures were introduced to improve environmental protection, in line with the principles of energy efficiency. The replacement of the existing lighting with LED lighting began in 2019 - more than 6000 lights have been replaced. More than 98% of the lighting in the old terminal building and 100% of the lighting in the new terminal building and at the new parking areas is LED lighting.

18 LED light poles using solar energy are planned to be installed along the service road in front of the Terminal, by the end of the summer season. These light poles do not require traditional electrical power from the network. Car parks have been equipped with LED light poles. According to initial projections, future solar lighting will reduce GHG emissions by 13517 kg/year (compared to a grid-connected installation).

The architects estimate the total investment value of the project will amount to approximately 80,000 EUR.

VINCI Airports, parent company of BELGRADE AIRPORT, is the first airport operator to have committed to a global international environmental strategy in 2016, to achieve the goal of net zero emission across its entire network by 2050. Key areas have been identified, namely the reduction of GHG emissions, the protection of nature and biodiversity, and the preservation of natural resources.

Efforts and commitment presented by BELGRADE AIRPORT to preserve the environment throughout 2022, have been recognized by the Airport Council International (ACI) and Belgrade Airport has recently obtained a Level 2 Certificate in the Airport Carbon Accreditation Program (ACA).

We are proud of the fact that in 2021 we reduced carbon dioxide emissions by as much as 19.4 percent compared to 2019.
